Sunset Hill Backyard Cottage

This 650-square-foot, one-bedroom backyard cottage is an example of how homeowners in Seattle can help ease the housing shortage in a beautiful way. Funded by the home owners using the equity from the main residence, they were able to provide housing for a close friend and her corgi. The L-shaped plan creates a south-facing courtyard, with large windows that bring in winter light and high overhangs that allow only a smidge of direct sunlight in during the summer months. The walls are a foot thick, offering wide window sills and energy efficiency. Systems include a mini-split heat pump and through-wall HRV fans. Builder: Hannes Construction, Haak Construction; Architect: Brett Holverstott; Owners: Sami & Jeanne; Engineer: Keith Ryan, TSE; Financing: Sound Community Bank.
